COMMUNION SERVICES:

Five communion services are held throughout the year.

Housling Cloths

In the early nineteenth century, holy communion was distributed only by the minister from a table at the front of the sanctuary.  Members would come forward to the table, about a dozen or so at a time, to receive holy communion and a short sermon.  In 1830, in Scotland, Rev. Thomas Chalmers was drawing so many people to Sunday worship, holy communion was becoming a time-consuming practice, so he devised a method of placing white table cloths over the back of the pews and serving the communion at one sitting with the elders assisting.

St. Paul’s is believed to be one of about four other churches in Canada who still use housling cloths for holy communion.  It is an inspiring sight as one enters the sanctuary to see all the white cloths hanging over the pew backs, giving a sense that we are all sitting at one table to receive communion.

They are used at the Lenten and Advent communions.

EVENING SERVICE OF PRAYERS FOR HELP AND HEALING

Held on the last Sunday of every month, excluding July and August, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.

A prayer service including a short meditation and communion by intinction is included.

Send prayer requests to the church vestry.
